Infraorder CARIDEA // Family Palaemonidae // Genus Palaemon
Palaemon longirostris H.Milne-Edwards, 1837 Larvae development
In July 2005, a new species of shrimp for the Black Sea, Palaemon longirostris, was caught near the Sinop Peninsula (Sezgin et al, 2007). This species is widespread in the European seas. Inhabits shallow estuaries with different salinity of water, but prefers brackish water in estuaries of large river systems. Euryhaline species (Van Den Brink, Van Der Velde, 1986).
Despite the fact that a species with such a name for the Black Sea fauna was noted in the 19th century (Chernyavsky, 1884), but until 2005 P. longirostris was not recorded in the Black Sea.
