Infraorder Brachyura // Family Varunidae // Genus Hemigrapsus
  Hemigrapsus penicillatus (De Haan, 1835)
Synonyms: Brachynotus brevidigitatus Yokoya, 1928   WoRMS, 2017
Grapsus (Eriocheir) penicillatus De Haan, 1835   WoRMS, 2017
Since not long time ago a similar species H. takanoi, was taken as H. penicillatus, its geographical distribution is not yet precisely known. The distribution of this species in Japan has so far been confirmed on the islands of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. This species was also found in Ishikari Bay, Hokkaido (Takano et al., 1999). H. penicillatus has previously been noted from northern Sakhalin Island, southern Hong Kong, the coast of China, the Korean Peninsula, Okinawa Island (southern Japan) and Taiwan (Sakai, 1976). Information on its distribution in these areas requires clarification, although recent studies have confirmed the presence of this species in Korean waters (Lee et al., 2013). Besides, Edmondson (1959) recorded H. penicillatus in Hawaii, but supporting material appears to have been lost, so its identification cannot be confirmed (Asakura and Watanabe, 2005).
