In the eastern Atlantic, from the British Isles to West Africa. The seas of the Mediterranean basin and the Black Sea (Kobyakova, Dolgopolskaya, 1969). It was recorded for all areas of the Black Sea coast, with the exception of strongly freshened ones. At present time, it is rather rare found in the Black Sea (Makarov, 2004). In the Mediterranean and North Seas, it is a common commercial species. In the Black Sea, the biology of this shrimp is poorly understood. According to opinion of some authors, P. serratus is a “cave shrimp” (Kovtun, 2009). The numerous cases of finds of this species in the Black Sea noted in the literature indicate that this is not the case. Most likely, P. serratus was more common in the 19th century than at the end of the 20th century, since V.I. Chernyavsky in 1884 described 5 varieties for this species. This suggests that he had extensive material, which in the late XX - early XXI centuries was already problematic to collect.
