Widespread species of shrimp. Found in the Baltic Sea, the North Sea off southwestern Norway, the Mediterranean Sea, the Black and Azov Seas. In 1930, this species was accidentally introduced to the Caspian Sea, where it successfully acclimatized. In 1954-1956. accidentally got along with a mullet into the Aral Sea from the Caspian Sea (Kobyakova, Dolgopolskaya, 1969). In the lagoons and estuaries of the Black and Azov seas, it forms clusters in shallow areas, among thickets of zostera, ruppia and pondweed. Occurs with P. elegans, but does not enter areas with a salinity of less than 7-8% (Kobyakova, Dolgopolskaya, 1969). Performs seasonal migrations (Zernov, 1913).
