The hairy crab from the Black Sea in the 19th century was identified as Pilumnus hirtellus. However, recent studies have shown that in the Azov-Black Sea basin occurs the crab Pilumnus aestuarii (Marin, 2018). Other species belonging to this genus have not yet been found.
The hairy crab lives in the East Atlantic, the seas of the Mediterranean basin and in the Black Sea and Azov Sea. It occurs in large quantities among fouling at a depth before 35 m, on different tipe of bottoms, more often in the littoral, on rocks and stones with algae (Kobyakova, Dolgopolskaya, 1969).
The significant variability of this species served as the basis for the description of new varieties (Chernyavsky, 1884).
